Collin county texas real estate

Collin county website

Collin County, Texas is located in northeastern Texas thirty miles south of the Red River. McKinney is the county seat, and is thirty-four miles northeast of Dallas. The majority of the Collin County area save for a small part of their western edge, is 851 square miles lies entirely within the Black land Prairie region of Texas.

Before the white settlers filled the Collin County area, the land was filled with branches of Caddo Indians that inhabited the area. Occasional outbreaks of violence were known to occur between the two groups, but there was no extended period of conflict since the Caddos withdrew from the county by the mid-1850s.

In 1840 free land was offered, to entice new settlers, despite this the estimated population of the county was only 150 when it was demarked from Fannin County on April 3, 1846, and named for Collin McKinney, who one of the first settlers of the county. The original county seat was Buckner however; McKinney became the county seat in 1848. Like the county, McKinney was named for Collin McKinney.

Since those days many changes have occurred. The area is highly compromised of many young families these days. This has caused the average age to drop considerably, and education levels have been steadily rising. Hispanics, traditionally only a small minority in the county, now outnumber many of the other minorities, such as African American or Asian.

Collin County is well on its way to being one of the most densely populated counties in Texas. The largest city, Plano, overshadows the county seat as the business and educational center of the county. Each year the area comes a little more into its own and grows into something more technological and more of something the whole area can be proud of. At its 150th anniversary the county had little left of what was settled in the 1840s.

Today there is much to do and see in Collin County. The Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary is located in McKinney, and has over four miles of nature trails, a native plant garden, natural science exhibits and bird watching.

The Collin County Youth Park and Farm Museum offers camping in addition to a Farm Museum. Towne Lake Recreation Area features a lake, picnic pavilions and playgrounds. Baseball, soccer, boxing, and golf are available for the sports fan, whether playing or cheering.

There are also plenty of shopping and cultural events. Not to mention all the entertaining festivals and community get-togethers you will find all over the county.
